Solar Powered Unmanned Aerial Vehicle
The objective of this project is to design, build and assemble a solar powered UAV, to increase the endurance inflight for aerial reconnaissance.
The traditional flight using a Li-po battery is around 10 mins long , but we want to enhance the endurance of the flight by charging the battery during the flight using solar cells.
Components used:
1200kv BLDC motors
30A Electronic Speed Controller
Servo Motor x 2
Buck-boost converter
Balsa wood
foam board
1800mah Li-po Battery
10 channel RC Controller
RC Receiver
Masking tape
To begin with, we designed a 3D model of the UAV which was 0.76 meters long and 1 meter wide, while calculating the weight, drag, thrust needed for the UAV to lift itself and glide and then started assembling by cutting the balsa wood for the fuselage, ailerons, rudders and foam board for airfoil using the 3D model.
Also, integrated the fuselage with 1200kv BLDC motor connected to 30A ESC and servomotors to control the ailerons and rudders for X ,Y, Z orientations.
After that, we started working on the power generation Unit, where we soldered 60 solar cells on to the airfoil, 0.5v each connected in series and parallel to produce voltage and current sufficient enough to charge the battery using a buck boost converter.
After that, we integrated everything together and did the flight testing .
Our Flight test and the project was successful, we achieved our objective to increase the endurance of the flight while charging the battery in flight and also increasing the endurance of the flight by 4.5 minutes.
